Department of Translation and Linguistics

The Department of Applied Linguistics/Translators and Interpreters boasts one of the few European courses in live intralingual subtitling, which includes a limited amount of interlingual live. The course is taught as part of the Department’s Master in Interpreting by Anthony Van Hoey, professional from the commercial broadcaster VTM (Vlaamse televisiemaatschappij/ Flemish Television Company) , who is also a former student of the department. Earlier the course was taught by Veerle Haverhals, also a former student, who is now head of subtitling at the same broadcaster. In addition, TricS, the Department research group, has a long-standing tradition in audiovisual translation and media access research, including research in intralingual live subtitling, which was conducted in collaboration with the Flemish Public Broadcaster VRT and funded through local projects. UAntwerp also organised the third International Symposium on Live Subtitling with Respeaking in 2011, and “Unlimited!”, the first international symposium on accessible live events in 2016.
